Preventive
Healthy gums are pink and firm and do not bleed when brushed. In the early stage of gum disease, gums become red, swollen and bleed easily when brushed or flossed. If left untreated over time, the disease progresses to the next stage, called peridontitis, which results in loss of bony support for tooth roots and thus can lead to loss of teeth. Early detection is vital!
Restorative
When part of the tooth is lost to decay or has broken down, the missing surfaces must be replaced to restore form and function. If decay is deep and bacterial contamination has reached the pulp (nerve) of the tooth, to save the tooth, root canal treatment (Endodontics) may need to be carried out prior to restoration. The type of restoration depends on how severely broken down the tooth is. In some instances the tooth cannot be saved and may need to be extracted. Missing teeth can be replaced with either crown and bridge work, implant supported crowns or removable dentures. However, any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Therefore, before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.
